Jewish Life in Vienna – The 2nd District
Jewish presence in Vienna dates back to the Middle Ages. The city became a beacon of Jewish culture during the 19th and early 20th centuries, producing luminaries like Sigmund Freud, Theodor Herzl, and Gustav Mahler. Despite the atrocities of the Holocaust, Vienna has worked to preserve and honor its Jewish past. The 2nd district is considered to be the jewish area of Vienna. The main street of the Jewish area is called Taborstraße and that’s exactly where our hotel is located. From the hotel you can explore modern Jewish life in Vienna, walking past kosher stores, chabad house, synagogues and more. At the end of the street, you’ll be already at the border of the 1st district, where the old town is situated. There you can visit the Jewish Museum Vienna, showcasing centuries of Jewish history, and the Stadttempel, Vienna’s only synagogue to survive World War II.
